During the last number of years, the parish has become increasingly active in the work of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. This organization which was founded in 1967 by the Canadian Catholic Bishops focuses on closing the economic and social gap which exists between the rich and the poor peoples of the world. It aims to make us aware of our responsibility to erase injustices. We are urged to recognize that all people everywhere are people of God. It is this feeling of solidarity that directs our prayers and almsgiving toward a more equitable sharing of the world’s resources.
The Share Lent Campaign is the focal point for Development and Peace activities at Star of the Sea. Symbols placed on the altar during Lent remind us of the economic, social, and spiritual difficulties faced daily by 3/4 of the world’s population. Prayers, petitions and reflections on poverty, injustice and on successes in development, help parishioners to see the value of sharing their relative wealth with those who have little.
